Hemothorax in the Newborn

Abstract

A three-day-old Orang Asli girl had umbilical bleeding and bruis ing as well as a left hemothorax was also present. A review of the literature reveals that hemothorax is a rare manifestation of hemorrhagic disease, and only five instances have so far been re ported. After treatment with vitamin K and transfusion of fresh blood, thoracentesis was performed. The chest became clinically and radiologically normal five days afer the onset of bleeding.
