Abstract
The dedicatory letter of Descartes' Meditations has suffered from almost total scholarly neglect. While accepting that the letter's contribution to our knowledge of Cartesian philosophy is slender, I argue that there is still much of historical importance to be learned from its depiction of the religious situation of Descartes' time, which was a main motivation for Descartes to write the Meditations.
