The introduction to the special section devoted to the book La religion de près is an opportunity to look back at the reasons that motivated such a section in Studies in Religion/Sciences religieuses. We explain that, in addition to a personal – almost emotional – attachment to the book, there are reasons more acceptable among academics: if Piette’s book opens new avenues for the anthropology and sociology of religion, it also echoes fields of English-speaking research developed in the same period. Finally, we present briefly the five contributions that make up this special section.
