Abstract
This article discusses the mechanical factors involved in the degeneration of cartilage as described in the current literature, in order to provide a logical basis for the use of joint protection measures in osteoarthritis. Criteria for implementation of joint protection techniques are developed in relation to these mechanical factors. Some relevant techniques are suggested to illustrate how commonly used treatment modalities can be applied specifically in an attempt to counter the most harmful forces on joints in osteoarthritis.
