Abstract
This article describes the origins and history of the incest taboo, with an emphasis on society's response to incestuous sexual assault. The complexity of the topic is shown by its relationship to sociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, law, religion and history. Although man has been fascinated by incest since primitive times, no logical interpretation of the incest taboo has been achieved. The most prominent explanations of the taboo and approaches to it are explored. Violations of the taboo are considered in the perspective of socioeconomic power and fundamental motivations within the family. Since incest is a widespread phenomenon, professionals who work with children should be aware of its origins, history, characteristics and implications in the children they serve so that they can recognize cases and intervene when necessary.
