Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a manual designed to provide the non-expert therapist (in child prosthetics), with a working knowledge and understanding of the basic principles involved in the habilitation process of the congenital, unilateral, below elbow child amputee. Twenty therapists, utilizing the evaluation questionnaire form developed by the investigator, evaluated the content and the format of the manual. An occupational therapist who did not have any special training in the area of child prosthetics, tested the manual's first two stages of the prosthetic training program: Stage 1 — Initial check-out evaluation of the prosthesis, and Stage 2 — Orientation. From the results of this study, it was concluded that; (1) There exists a definite need to develop a teaching manual for therapists working with upper limb-deficient children, and (2) With revision the manual developed in this research project, will provide therapists with a valuable teaching tool that will facilitate and promote learning of the basic principles involved in the habilitation process of the congenital, unilateral, below elbow child amputee. The purpose of this article is not to present the content of the manual itself, but rather to present the literature review on which the content of the manual was based, and the methodology from which it was developed.
