L'individu malade ou handicapé est placé, par les impératifs thérapeutiques dans une situation de dépendance et de privation sur le plan socio-économique.
Le travail étant une nécessité vitale, la thérapie industrielle devient un instrument thérapeutique indispensable tant pour réadapter un ex-malade au travail que pour donner un minimum de dignité et d'indépendance à un chronique.
L'ergothérapeute a un rôle important à jouer dans l'orientation préprofessionnelle et dans la direction des ex-malades dans le choix réaliste d'une occupation rémunératrice. La gestion d'un atelier protégé est cependant accessible à l'ergothérapeute possédant une formation administrative.
