Une recherche quantitative portant sur le fonctionnement des familles a été réalisée auprès de 244 familles provenant de trois régions socio-sanitaires du Québec. De ce groupe, quatorze familles ont accepté de collaborer au volet qualitatif de cette étude. Vingt-huit parents ont participé à des entrevues en profondeur. Au cours de ces rencontres, l'impact de la présence d'un enfant ayant une incapacité motrice sur l'utilisation du temps a été abordée avec eux. Une analyse de contenu thématique et catégoriel a permis de ressortir les différentes facettes de l'impact de l'enfant handicapé sur le temps parental en fonction de quatre sphères de vie. En fait, les parents rencontrés indiquent que la présence de leur enfant influence grandement le temps disponible pour leur vie personnelle, conjugale, familiale ainsi que pour le travail rémunéré. De façon générale, les mères consacrent plus de temps que les pères aux soins de l'enfant. Cette situation a un impact direct sur la gestion du temps maternel. À la lumière des commentaires des répondants, des recommandations émergent afin d'accompagner les parents vers l'atteinte d'une meilleure organisation de leur temps.
