Abstract
Adaptive designs are occasionally used in clinical trials for allocating entering patients between two treatments. The randomized playthe- winner rule is such an adaptive design originally introduced by Wei and Durham (1978) and Wei (1979) . The present paper provides an optimal choice of design parameter for such a rule with reference to the Michigan ECMO trial, a real life application of the rule. Finally, choice of design parameter in a more general situation is also discussed.
