Abstract
I am deeply honoured to be invited to aive the First Soumitra Kumar Chakravarti Memorial Lecture.
Calcutta has been the cradle of statistics in India where many distinguished great statisticians of India have grown. Many of them have been associated with tho Calcutta Statistical Association. I am therefore, particlarly honoured that you have asked me, who is not a statistician by training, to give this Pirst Memorial Lecture, I do hope, the viewpoints of a user of statistics will be found useful.
