Abstract
For square contingency tables with ordered categories, this paper decomposes the well-known marginal homogeneity (MH) model (Stuart 1955) into an extended MH model and the model of equality of row and column marginal means. When the MH model fits the data poorly, this decomposition may be useful for knowing the reason why the MH model fits the data poorly. Such examples are given.
