We describe our approach, policy and experience in establishing a sodium and potassium analyser for use by medical and laboratory staff in a satellite laboratory adjacent to a paediatric intensive care unit. The effects on patient care are difficult to quantify, but are felt to be beneficial. A reduction in ‘out of hours' laboratory workload and significant financial savings have been achieved.
