The effect of otitis media on the enzyme system of the middle ear has not been studied extensively. It is logical to assume that the mucosa would be damaged and that the damage would vary with the etiologic agents. We have initiated a group of studies, therefore, which propose to examine various enzyme systems to determine the mechanisms of tissue damage.
