Abstract

However, with the expected growth of bariatric surgery in the future, the number of claims in this area are certain to grow. Therefore, it is important for surgeons who are engaged in the practice of bariatric surgery or who are contemplating entering the practice of bariatric surgery to consider risk management guidelines and principles very carefully. It is important to follow the available guidelines and criteria like those established by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery to help reduce the risk of liability. Despite appropriate care and treatment, unfortunately, these patients will continue to suffer complications, some of which are life-threatening. The importance of establishing and maintaining a solid physician-patient relationship by using appropriate interpersonal skills cannot be overemphasized.
