Abstract
This article reviews court cases pertaining to infringements on academic freedom and considers if tenure is necessary. In particular, the author raises issues such as how the First Amendment protects the academic freedom of faculty and if there are alternatives that might provide equal safeguards. Although the author weighs the pros and cons of tenure, he concludes that without tenure, academic freedom is jeopardized.
