The purpose of this study was to examine the process of informal learning in the context of family caregiving for the frail elderly in the community. Sixty ethnographic interviews were conducted with fifteen family caregivers. A model of informal learning as reflection-in-action emerged from the data. Five themes of Meaning and six types of Informal Learning were derived from the interview data. An implicit cultural theme of "ownership of knowledge" in caregiving is hypothesized and implications for teaching and learning in everyday situations is discussed.
