Abstract
A comprehensive theory of participation in organized adult education must consider at least three types of behaviour—nonparticipation, participation, and dropout. Empirically-based typologies of motivations and deterrents to participation have been developed. No attempt has been made to identify a factor structure of variables associated with dropout. In this study the validity of a theoretically-based typology of variables associated with dropout was empirically tested through factor analysis of variables selected from previous dropout research. There was general confirmation of the typology and similarities and differences to Darkenwald and Valentine's (1985) deterrents construct were noted. The dropout typology could be a valuable aid in guiding future research as well as alerting adult education practitioners to a range of factors that have influenced dropout.
