The article reports on a study of status attainment in urban and rural labour markets. The model includes the following variables: occupational status of father, mental ability, education, occupational status, and income. The data were collected from a cohort study of Norwegian males The main results document that a status attainment model of the Wisconsin type gives different results for groups that have had their life courses in an urban as compared to a rural labour market. The findings can thus be used as an argument for the inclusion of structural characteristics of society in models of social mobility.
