The empirical results and theoretical foundations of research on con sumption activities are discussed. Consumption activities are related to welfare in society, and economic and sociological thinking about welfare are considered. The aim is to construct sociological models for analysing consumption activities. The present economic models are not sufficient. A sociological approach in theory construction is needed.
