Abstract
The paper reflects an attempt to construct the composition of families in Finland by linguistic category, on the basis of published tabulations in the 1970 Census of Population. The method is, in essence, the solution of twelve equations, with twelve unknowns. The findings allow one to make inferences about fertility, family formation and family structure, by main language, for Finland. Moreover, some inferences may be made about the relative prevalence of bilingual families and their fertility in urban and rural areas of Finland. Finally, there are some recommendations about future tabulation requirements for the Finnish census data on families and households.
