Abstract
Objective
The purpose of the article was to trace the history of domestic technology in the White House from 1800 to 1952.
Research Design
Data were gathered in two ways: a search of historical documents and government reports and an on–site examination of White House files.
Analysis
The discussion is structured thematically and chronologically to show the changes that occurred over time.
Key Findings
The changes coincided with changes in Presidents and available technology.
Conclusion
The study provides valuable information for interior design historians; design educators; historians of presidents, first families, technology, and the White House; and curators. Similar methodologies could be used in describing and comparing the technological developments in other historic homes.
