Abstract
Some of the “qualitative” aspects of task lighting for horizontal work surfaces are examined. By means of graphic and photographic analyses of the cause and effect of reflected glare, the problems associated with the standard strip fluorescent task light fixtures are shown. Today's lighting designer is able to provide improved visibility in work environments through the use of a different concept of light source location using fixtures designed around the new compact fluorescent lamps, introduced in the 1980s.
