Abstract
Current developments in the carpet industry which have an impact on carpet aesthetics, cost, and performance are presented. Essential criteria for appearance retention and wear resistance of carpets are discussed in relation to expected traffic loads in residential and commercial interiors. Parameters such as constructional variables, fiber and yarn type, pile density and weight, color, texture, and functional finishes are reviewed. These parameters essentially define appearance retention and are directly related to service life of carpeting. The importance of a maintenance program is emphasized.
