Abstract
Environmental programming is a flexible design teaching tool that is appropriate for use in a variety of educational settings. It encourages interior design students to emphasize development of design criteria and analysis of client needs before they approach a graphic design solution. It also provides a design approach that may be used successfully in a traditional lecture format class by students who do not possess graphic design skills. The project incorporates three separate approaches to environmental programming. Following development of a detailed user profile and environmental setting, design criteria are formulated that would be: (1) supportive for the chosen user group in a specific physical setting, (2) facilitate or support a particular social process, and (3) meet the needs of a handicapped person.
