Abstract
Cephalalgia Referees in the year 2006
For Cephalalgia 2006 has been an excellent year made so by the continuing high quality of our submissions, our reviewers' considerable efforts and by thorough work of the Associate Editors.
We all owe the referees a debt that cannot be easily repaid more than the knowledge that their expert, careful and balanced assessments continue to push up the Journal's standards. We have had 600 submissions to deal with in the last twelve months, so for many referees the burden grows. This continues to provide a welcome problem, a choice of many good manuscripts, however, it does provide the significant issue of rejections. It is a challenge at Cephalalgia to be sure that most issues have something for the very distinct range of people interested in headache. If some of what you read seems unfamiliar this reflects the breadth of our area of endeavour, and reflects a strength in our field. If sometimes rejection seems arbitrary, I can assure you it never is.
We have tried to address the important issue of time to publication in 2006 by increasing the page numbers to reduce the backlog. We were caught by the pleasant challenge of increasing numbers of excellent submissions that gave us a backlog. This seems largely resolved and 2007 should have very substantially improved submission to publication times.
It has taken a year and now we have the machinery in place to provide an initiative in patient input where articles will be selected by the European Patient Group for highlighting. They will be made available free on the website with a lay commentary. I do hope we can facilitate patients finding out about our work sooner, and thus supporting the International Headache Society, and especially member societies, in our mission.
I would like to conclude by thanking everyone involved in the Journal production, the Associate Editors who are so crucial and the Blackwell's staff who provide smooth, responsive support to the Journal from year to year. Editing your journal is one of the great privileges I have. I am sorry if anything was overlooked in 2006, it would not have been intentional, I am proud of our academic record and impact, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help make the world a better place for people with headache problems through Cephalalgia.
