Thomas Christiano argues that the link between justice and democracy lies in ‘public equality’. The publicity condition of equality leads to democratic procedures as the best, if not the only, acceptable way to promote people's interests equally in a visible way. This article argues that the link between justice and democracy lies in equally respecting people as autonomous agents rather than in equal consideration for everyone's interests.
