Abstract
BACKGROUND
Caring for a patient from Russia who is having major surgery for massive abdominal cancer in a foreign country is challenging in itself. The challenge is even greater when the child is having a surgical procedure that is rare. This poster will show the multicultural care approach while undergoing hyperthermic intraoperative peritoneal chemotherapy surgery and treatment. The staff of this free-standing children’s hospital located in a multicultural city of mostly Hispanic descent had to research creative strategies and partner with the mother to ensure comfortable care to the child. The staff was challenged in respecting the pain, communication, and care needs specific to the Russian culture as well as maintaining the psychosocial support of this young lady with major cancer, while not speaking the language. Utilizing Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory, an interdisciplinary team worked together to ensure optimal outcomes leading to a safe and healthy return to Russia.
