Abstract
Misuse of illicit substances is a common problem encountered in general practice, among both adults and young people. It varies from casual experimentation to problematic harmful dependence and requires specific considerations with regard to physical, psychological and social well-being. Many generalists find the holistic assessment of substance users a daunting prospect, particularly as the language and subculture of substance misuse can be somewhat enigmatic. GPs are actually well placed and skilled to deliver a comprehensive assessment of drug users, to deliver important harm reduction advice and to negotiate and jointly embark upon an effective treatment pathway.
