Abstract
‘Tinnitus’ stems from the Latin tinnire, meaning ‘to ring’. Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of any corresponding external auditory stimulation. It is a very common symptom presented to general practice; this is not surprising as approximately 1 in 10 adults in the UK experience tinnitus. This article aims to provide information for professionals working in general practice and help them care for patients with tinnitus. A practical aid to ‘consulting a patient with tinnitus’ is included to help clinicians (and therefore their patients) with this common problem.
