Abstract
Availability of safe drinking water and immunisation have been the most cost effective public health measures. It is estimated that worldwide 2–3 million deaths are prevented annually due to immunisation. Herd immunity extends protection to the whole community but immunisation uptake needs to be high. This article aims to clarify the immunisation programme in the UK and to discuss the challenges GPs may face. Illustrative examples will demonstrate the challenges that practitioners may come across in their routine practice.
