Abstract
Anaphylaxis is a severe life-threatening generalized or systemic allergic reaction. Although only 1 in 1333 people in the UK will ever suffer an anaphylactic reaction and less than 1% of those that suffer an anaphylactic attack die as a result of that attack, anaphylaxis is an important condition. Each year in the UK, there are approximately 20 deaths as a direct result of anaphylaxis (one death per 3 million population). Risk of death is increased in those with pre-existing asthma, particularly if the asthma is poorly controlled. Prompt recognition and appropriate management save lives.
