Abstract
Dr. Anna Milanesi interviews Dr. Gregory Brent about his ATA centennial article, “A Historical Reflection on Scientific Advances in Understanding Thyroid Hormone Action.” The cloning of the thyroid hormone nuclear receptor genes, reported in 1986, was a watershed event in the study of thyroid hormone action. This review summarizes the landmark studies that led to the cloning of the nuclear receptor and the impact on subsequent investigations of thyroid hormone signaling. The origins of the recognition of thyroid hormone action outside the nucleus are also discussed, as well as using thyroid hormone and its analogues to treat conditions, such as hyperlipidemia, obesity, and heart failure.
