Abstract
Between June 2000 and January 2002 we performed laparoscopic-assisted Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty in 5 children with pelvi-uretric junction (PUJ) obstruction. Their ages ranged from 3 months to 10 years, with 3 patients younger than one year. One patient presented with left lower abdominal pain and was found to have an obstructed pelvic kidney, one presented with recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), and the rest were diagnosed antenatally. The diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasound (US), diuretic renogram (DTPA), and/or intravenous urography (IVU). The procedure entailed mobilization of the colon to expose the pelvis and upper ureter. The PUJ was brought to the flank via a 10 mm port and the procedure was completed as in the open technique. This has proven to be simple and less time consuming, with satisfactory outcome and good cosmetic results.
