Endoscopically Assisted Extirpation of Giant Fibroadenoma of the Breast through Transaxillary Incision

Background and Purpose:

Although benign large breast tumors, mostly giant or juvenile fibroadenomas, to be excised occur in adolescence, the cosmesis after excision has been neglected. The aim of this report is to describe our techniques and the early outcome of endoscopically assisted extirpation of giant fibroadenomas located in the upper half of the breast.

Patients and Methods:

The huge tumors in two patients, 14 and 20 years old, were located in the upper half of the left breast, they had been diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology to be fibroadenomas. With the patients under general anesthesia in a supine position, a 4-cm incision was made in the midaxillary line. The tumors were then extirpated with endoscopic assistance.

Results:

The patients were extremely satisfied with the cosmetic results of the procedure. There were no complications, and their operative time and estimated blood loss were acceptable.

Conclusion:

The cosmetic results are drastically improved by endoscopically assisted removal through axillary incision for benign large tumors in the upper half of the breast in adolescence.
