Abstract
ABSTRACT
Video-assisted thoracoscopic (VAT) biopsy was done in seven children who developed pulmonary nodules following treatment for nonpulmonary cancer. Metastatic lesions were diagnosed in two children with osteogenic sarcoma and hemangiopericytoma, respectively. In three children with Ewing sarcoma and two with ovarian germ cell tumor, the pathology of the pulmonary lesions was benign, apparently secondary to chemotherapy. Thoracoscopic lung biopsy is an effective diagnostic modality associated with minimal morbidity. It may obviate the need for thoracotomy and is therefore recommended for the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions appearing in children with nonpulmonary cancer that are not accessible to CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy.
