Abstract
ABSTRACT
This report describes a useful laparoscopic technique for the evaluation and treatment of a contralateral ovarian teratoma. A 13-year-old female was referred after having undergone excision of a right ovarian teratoma several years previously. Recent follow-up ultrasound had demonstrated a suspicious lesion within the left ovary. The ovary was explored laparoscopically and appeared grossly normal. In view of the positive ultrasound, however, the ovary was eviscerated via a left lower quadrant trocar site and manually examined. Palpation evidenced a distinct nodule, which was excised from the surrounding tissue. The ovary was returned to its normal location in the pelvis under direct visualization. Pathology confirmed a benign teratoma. The child was discharged within 24 h without incident. This technique is potentially useful in the management of a variety of ovarian lesions, affording maximal salvage of ovarian tissue with the advantages of minimally invasive surgical intervention.
