Abstract
ABSTRACT
Laparoscopic assisted splenectomy has been used in the treatment of patients with massive splenomegaly, but to date there have been no reports of laparoscopic assisted hemisplenectomy. We describe a case of a 10-year-old male who underwent a laparoscopic assisted hemisplenectomy for a symptomatic splenic hemangioma. The laparoscopic assisted procedure allowed for the fully mobilized and partially devascularized spleen to be delivered through a small abdominal incision for division. The laparoscopic assisted hemisplenectomy avoids the need for the larger standard open splenectomy incision resulting in less postoperative pain, a more rapid recovery, and a superior cosmetic result.
