Abstract
ABSTRACT
Purpose: Laparoscopic transcystic common bile duct exploration (LTCBDE) has been shown to be safe and effective in the management of common bile duct stones (CBDS) in the adult patient. This is the first report of a successful LTCBDE in a pediatric patient with CBDS. Methods: A 12-year-old 20-kg African-American male with sickle cell disease presented with symptomatic cholelithiasis and common bile duct dilatation on ultrasound. Results: The patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with intraoperative cholangiography, which showed two CBDS. The stones were successfully removed laparoscopically via a LTCBDE and the child was discharged on postoperative day 2. Conclusion: LTCBDE is a safe and effective alternative to open cholecystectomy with common bile duct exploration in selected children with CBDS.
