Abstract
Richard D. DeShazo, M.D., is Billy S. Guyton Distinguished Professor, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Chair of the Department of Medicine, and was the first Director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of Mississippi, Jackson. He received a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama and completed studies toward his medical degree at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. deShazo pursued an internship in pediatrics at Children's and University Hospitals, Birmingham, a residency in internal medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and a U.S. Army research training fellowship in microbiology/immunology and a fellowship in clinical immunology at Walter Reed. His research interests include the application of immunological laboratory techniques to problem solving in disease pathogenesis in allergy and rheumatology, immunodeficiency disease, late phase allergic reactions, drug and insect hypersensitivity, and sinusitis. Dr. deShazo is an associate editor of the Southern Medical Journal and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences.
