Abstract
Despite its frequency, chronic sinusitis is difficult both to diagnose and to treat, especially in the pediatric population. Aside from the fact that chronic sinusitis often has a subtle presentation, frequently a disorder underlies it that itself requires proper diagnosis and treatment for sinusitis to be adequately treated. Common underlying disorders include immunodeficiency, allergy, anatomic abnormality, foreign object, cystic fibrosis, and environmental sensitivity. This article briefly reviews all these disorders, with special attention focused on the diagnosis and treatment of the immunodeficiency disorders that may underlie chronic sinusitis.
