Review of the literature classifies nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia as a separate entity from purulent rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, and chronic hyperplastic sinusitis with nasal polyp formation. Clinical expression can easily mimic these in a cluster of symptoms and signs. This discussion is designed to enhance awareness of the ease and usefulness of the clinical test termed the nasal smear. With this office test the clinician can feel more secure in his or her diagnosis.
