Abstract
Although rubber has been used in thousands of products for over a century, only recently has allergy to latex been recognized as a significant medical problem. These reactions are IgE-mediated, with several latex proteins isolated as the incriminating allergens. Children with spina bifida who have had multiple surgical procedures appear to be at high risk for latex allergy, with life-threatening reactions reported during surgery. Prick skin testing with latex is an important tool in confirming latex allergy and has been advocated in all children with spina bifida before any surgical procedure. Parents of children with latex allergy should take precautions that their children avoid contact with rubber products and have all operations in a latex-free surgical suite.
