Abstract
Behavioral measures and approaches can be used by investigators to assess the performance of children with asthma. The present review describes a number of techniques, with demonstrated validity and reliability, that can be used to measure behavioral aspects of children as well as the responses of members of their families. Specific approaches are described, including the use of standardized behavioral instruments, self-report measures, quality of life indices, and observational methods. Problems that arise in using these approaches are discussed. Those instruments that are commercially available are noted in an appendix.
