Abstract
Asthma is the most common chronic disease seen in the pediatric population. As such it is one of the most common reasons that children are seen in the pediatric emergency room. Despite our increased knowledge regarding the management of asthma in children, asthma deaths in the pediatric population are on the rise. The following article summarizes the management of acute asthma in the pediatric population. The discussion emphasizes the importance of beta2 adrenergic agonists. In addition, the role of aminophylline, corticosteroids, and anticholinergic agents is also discussed. It is the intent of this paper to allow the pediatrician to become conversant with the approach to the management of acute asthma.
