Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Stimulated by the worldwide success of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, other laparoscopic procedures were rapidly introduced to the field of general surgery. One of these was the laparoscopic removal of the spleen, first described in 1992. Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is an attractive alternative to the standard surgical approach to either a vertical or transverse laparotomy incision and is rapidly becoming the preferred treatment for benign splenic disease at several institutions.
