Abstract
A series of ten consecutive patients with advanced intraabdominal malignancy who were treated with the CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers and laser scalpel from September 1985 to February 1987 is presented.
This series indicated the advantage and limitations of these laser techniques resulting in an evolution to a primary dependency on the Nd:YAG laser with laser scalpel for the extirpation of abdominal tumors. The case histories indicate the ability of the laser scalpel to redefine operability and to conclude major procedures with precision, safety, and a successful postoperative course. Despite this success, the surgeon is cautioned to consider lasers as part of his available technology and not as the only instrument capable of contributing to a successful operative result.
