Abstract
This article presents a review of the psychosocial consequences of abnormal Pap tests and mammograms. Published articles related to the effects of abnormal Pap tests and mammograms were identified by MEDLINE search. Studies related to the communication of test results, the consequences of an abnormal test result, and the role of health care providers emerged as relevant areas. The communication of abnormal test results is done using a variety of methods. Both physician and patient characteristics can hinder proper communication. Abnormal Pap tests and mammograms can cause anxiety, fear, depression, and failure to comply with treatment and future routine screening tests. Health care providers are the focal point for motivating patients to return for treatment and screening. Tracking and reminder systems can facilitate providers' efforts to improve compliance. Several techniques can be used by providers to improve the notification process and reduce the negative psychosocial effects of abnormal Pap tests and mammograms.
