Abstract
On February 24,1994, the Institute of Medicine held a public briefing and released a report, "Women and Health Research: Ethical and Legal Issues of Including Women in Clinical Trials." The Institute of Medicine report, which was commissioned by the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health, accompanies the recent release of new guidelines by both the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration mandating gender equity in research. Part One of this article outlines the historical background leading to today's new emphasis on gender equity in clinical research. Part Two concludes with recommendations to researchers to ensure that guidelines promoting gender equity in research and research practices secure the desired women's health outcomes.
