Abstract
This article describes the psychologic implications of participation in the new assisted reproductive technologies (ART). In the first of five sections, psychosocial characteristics that typify ART participants are reviewed. In the second section, stressful aspects of the treatment and participants' adjustment to ART are discussed. The third section reviews the available evidence that suggests a relationship between psychologic factors and biologic outcome. The fourth section reviews psychologic interventions designed to assist ART participants. A summary section addresses the future of ART and highlights continuing issues in the development and use of assisted reproductive technologies.
