Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex illness that is difficult to diagnose. As the prototypic autoimmune disease, SLE has the potential to affect each organ system of the body in a different manner. This article presents 11 criteria to help the physician diagnose SLE. Four or more of these must be present to ensure the diagnosis. Issues relating to gender, race, and age; symptoms; patient history and physical exam; and the laboratory exam are discussed.
